It is hard to write what is in effect an artist’s statement without sounding pompous and egotistical but here goes… I always wanted to be an artist, my brothers wanted to be things like lawyers, or ball players, or cowboys. For me it was art and art became a way of expressing and asserting myself. So, I paint my life. It is a way of ensuring that something of me goes on after I am gone. And it’s more than that, if I’m not creating something I go crazy, or crazier. The result is that much of my art is very personal, depicting events, people, places, animals, situations, conditions, perceptions, and memories that make up who I am. In this case it is true, every picture tells a story…In a nutshell, here’s the context. I was born and raised in south Texas, Eagle Pass and Del Rio, two towns on the Rio Grande. Family roots are deep in that part of the world, on both sides of the border. My parents were 50’s yuppies, a lawyer and a teacher. They were very devout Catholics. I had a Catholic education through college (now in recovery). I have two brothers, an older, Skip and a younger, Johnny. We were orphaned by the time I was 11. After that, we were raised by an aunt and uncle. We lived in El Paso, Los Angeles, and settled in San Antonio. Went to high school (Central Catholic) there and college (St. Edward’s) in Austin; was on the 7 year plan and graduated from UT San Antonio in 1980. BA in psychology, something useful. Lived in San Antonio, moved to Austin, and finally ended up in Albuquerque in 1989. Went through jobs, relationships, legal problems, medical problems, drugs and alcohol (in recovery), and emerged scathed but smiling, and still having fun. For the most part I am self-taught, though I have taken art classes, usually earned C’s. Stylistically, I like the impressionists, expressionists, and social realists. I paint on site or from photos, sometimes a combination of both. I use acrylic paints on canvas or wood. There is a strong element of Hispanic and Catholic influences in my paintings. That’s the context, the rest of the story is in the pictures. |
