CORK FEST
Cork Fest is an arts, crafts, and music festival in the South Valley. It is held the first Saturday of October at my home in Albuquerque, 1024-A La Vega SW. Features art, food, music and theater.
Cork Fest was inspired by Steve White's Folk Farm. The Folk Farm was an annual yard fest that Steve held in his front yard. Steve’s goal was to provide a venue for artists and crafters to show and sell their work in a free and friendly atmosphere. Artists from all over the country would show up, set up and kick back to listen to music, eat, play games, trade art and occasionally, even sell art. Folk Farm turned into an annual event we all looked forward to.
When Steve moved to Georgia (he’s back), the rest of us felt that we couldn't let the tradition die. Kenny Chavez hosts Yard Fest in the Spring. I took the Fall, and so CorkFest was born.
The important part about fests is that they are FREE! Free to the artists and free to the public. The musicians donate their time and talents. People share food and drink. For CorkFest, I donate space and organize the artists and event, Sheila does publicity, Robert and Steve handle the music. It’s the group effort that makes it a success.
CorkFest '04, ’05, ‘06, '07 and '08 were successful. Artists were able to show and sell their work. Every one seemed to have a good time. We talked art, music, and politics, met people, ate, drank, danced, sold and traded art. There are more artists and musicians each year and the turn out has grown also. The karma has been great, its all been good.
So, with thanks to Sheila, Steve, Robert, Phil and everyone else who have helped make a great event, we're doing it again. This fest will be the 6th annual and we want to make it special. There is a new car play, poetry readings, new music. CorkFest '09 will be the best ever. This year it will be held on Sept. 26 from 9:30 to 5:30 pm. Cross the river on Bridge and follow the signs. There is a flyer with more details, as well as, photos of past fests on the Gallery page.
